Favourite Things is a regular exploration of creative people's top five favourite things. It could be a book, a piece of artwork, a much-loved city, an ornament or a favourite hobby. If you'd like to share your Favourite Things, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Today we welcome Rebecca Morris Knight of Pretty Dandy, an online creative homewares boutique based in Nottingham/Barcelona. And here are her Favourite Things...
1. My “Grim Up North” mug
I have something of a problem when it comes to mugs. I love them. Lots of them. It’s reached a point where my husband has put a ban on new mugs, unless I retire one from the collection. This one will never be retired, it’s my favourite. It’s by a designer called Andrew Tanner and represents lots of different things to me:
- I love tea and this is a great size and a perfect shape for drinking out of.
- I’m from Yorkshire and drinking from this mug reminds me of home – even though it’s definitely not grim up North!
- It’s got a sense of humour, and who doesn’t love a mug with a sense of humour?
- I bought it at the Lustre craft fair at Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham, which is a craft show I really love and go to every year.
- I’ve recently moved away from Nottingham to Barcelona, so it reminds me of my second home too.
Basically this mug is as near perfect as a mug could get for me.
2. My Button box
As well as collecting mugs, I collect buttons. I’m noticing a theme here… Luckily, buttons are smaller and easier to store. Plus they come in a huge range of designs & colours, perfect for a magpie like me. And I can legitimately claim I “need them for work”, so there’s no ban on how many I can have. This box is a small part of my collection… it’s reserved for the prettiest buttons that I use on cards, cushions, clothes and more.
3. My iPhone
I realise this is something of a boring choice, but I can’t think of anything else that I look at first thing in the morning and last thing at night (apart from my husband and I didn’t think I should pick him as one of my favourite ‘things’!). I got one out of curiosity and now I totally love it. I’m sure all smartphones are the same, I just can’t believe that there is something so amazing that fits in my pocket. I can access my emails, play games (all-time favourite; Tiny Acorns), take and share photos with my friends, find someone to chat to on twitter, check the weather and search the whole internet. We are living in amazing times and every time I look at this little object with the power to do so much I feel very lucky.
4. My favourite item of clothing
This is a close-up of my favourite dress (which I'm wearing in the photo of me) by Leona Edmiston. This dress was my bridesmaid dress at the wedding of two of my closest friends. Every bride likes to say things like “oh you’ll get loads of wear out of it afterwards” and this is rarely the case, apart from with this dress. It is made out of beautiful material, it’s fun and grown-up at the same time, the cut is interesting and feels kind of vintage and it has the most interesting floral print in beautiful colours. Plus… and this pretty much seals the deal… it has pockets! I love to wear dresses, but hate not being able to carry my phone/money/keys. Not a problem with this dress. So it’s filled with memories and a dream to wear, what’s not to like?
5. My Chevron print
This is by a really talented artist called Francesca Iannaccone. I love the colour tones, the chevron shape and how bold it is. However, to me it is more than just a print. It is also the first thing I purchased when setting up my online shop. It inspired me time and again while I was selecting products, researching, visiting trade fairs, writing press releases, building the site and doing all the other myriad jobs that involve setting up a new online business. That was about 2 and a half years ago now, and I love it just as much as the first day I saw it. In fact, it came with us when we moved to Barcelona and has pride of place next to my favourite feature in our quirky flat – the pliers left in the wall!
